Washing machine leaking from the bottom

Usually urgent, not an emergency
Start with the easy causes: too much detergent (or detergent that is not HE) foams over, a dirty door seal on a front loader lets water past, and a drain filter cap not closed fully after cleaning drips at the front. Water from the back is usually the fill hoses at the taps or the drain hose; a steady leak from underneath the middle is the pump or the tub and needs a technician.
Is a washing machine leaking an emergency?
Usually urgent, not an emergency. Turn off both water taps behind the washer. If the floor around it is wet, switch off its breaker rather than reaching for the plug; then soak up the water. A burst fill hose is an emergency — it can release water at full house pressure: shut the taps or the main valve at once.

Suds: the detergent
Use HE detergent in high-efficiency washers and the amount on the label; the softer the water, the less you need [1].
Front loader: the door seal
Wipe the rubber gasket, including the folds under the edge; lint and soap on the seal lets water leak [1][2].
The drain filter cap
If the filter was cleaned recently, make sure the cap and the little drain tube are closed tightly [2].
The fill hoses
Check the hoses where they meet the taps and the washer. Reconnect them if loose; replace cracked or bulging rubber hoses [2].
The drain hose and standpipe
Water on the wall behind the washer can be the drain hose connection or a standpipe that overflows when the washer pumps out.

Safety first
- Unplug the washer before moving it or reaching behind it — or, if the floor is wet, switch off its breaker instead.
- Keep water away from the outlet behind the machine.
When to call a pro
Call an appliance technician if water comes from under the middle of the machine or the leak continues with new hoses.
What to photograph

Should I replace rubber fill hoses?
Check them whenever you pull the washer out, and replace any hose that is cracked, bulging or leaking at the ends.
