Is a furnace blowing cold air an emergency?
Usually not immediately — but a home without heat in freezing weather becomes urgent, especially for anyone elderly, very young or unwell, and pipes can freeze. If you smell gas, do not touch switches or the thermostat: leave, then call the gas company or 911 from outside. If you see soot around the furnace, turn it off and call a technician.
The most common cause is the thermostat fan set to ON instead of AUTO, which runs the blower even when the burners are off. After that: a dirty filter that makes the furnace overheat and shut its burners off, a dirty flame sensor that shuts the gas off seconds after lighting, or on a high-efficiency furnace a blocked condensate drain.

Set point and batteries
The thermostat must be on Heat, set above the room temperature, with fresh batteries [2].

A short blast of cool air is normal
The blower can start a moment before the heat exchanger is warm; continuous cold air is not normal [3].

High-efficiency furnace: the condensate drain
A blocked condensate line or pump can stop a high-efficiency furnace from heating [3].

Gas supply
If other gas appliances are also out, the supply is off — call the gas company [3].

- Turn the furnace off at its service switch before opening the burner door.
- If you smell gas, do not touch switches — leave and call from outside.
- Keep a working CO alarm near sleeping areas.
When to call a pro
Call an HVAC technician if the fan is on AUTO, the filter is clean and it still blows cold, or for any flame sensor, ignition or gas issue.
What to photograph
