Dishwasher leaking from the bottom

Usually urgent, not an emergency
Suds on the floor mean the wrong soap: hand dish soap or laundry detergent in a dishwasher foams up and pushes out past the door. Clear water at the front is usually the door gasket or a dishwasher that is not level; water from underneath, further back, points at a hose clamp, the pump seal or the inlet valve.
Is a dishwasher leaking from the bottom an emergency?
Usually urgent, not an emergency. Turn off the water supply under the sink and switch off the dishwasher’s breaker, then soak up the water — it soaks under flooring and cabinets. If water is reaching outlets or cords, switch off the breaker before touching anything.

What to check, in order
Suds? It is the detergent
Only automatic-dishwasher detergent belongs in a dishwasher. Hand dish soap, hand soap or laundry detergent make too much foam, and it overflows [1][2]. Run a rinse cycle with the door open a crack after wiping out the foam.
The door gasket
Wipe the rubber seal around the tub and look for tears or food stuck to it. A soiled or cracked gasket leaks at the bottom of the door [2].
Is it level?
A dishwasher tilted forward lets water reach the door. Level it side to side and front to back with the feet [1].
Loading and the filter
Items poking into the door seal or blocking the spray arms can throw water at the door; a clogged filter can make the tub overfill [1].
Under and behind: hoses and the inlet valve
Remove the kick plate at the bottom. Water at the back or side points at a loose hose clamp, a cracked hose, or the inlet valve; water under the centre points at the pump seal or sump [1].

- Switch off the breaker and close the supply valve before removing the kick plate.
- Do not run the dishwasher again until the source is found.
When to call a pro
Call an appliance technician if water comes from under the centre (pump seal or sump) or from the inlet valve, or if the tub is cracked.
What to photograph
